Elder Protection Services

QuickInfo

  • Free and confidential service
  • Support and advocacy for elderly people
  • Education to rest homes and related agencies
  • Can intervene if necessary, or refer matter on

Our free and confidential service supports elderly people over the age of 65, where there are concerns about their health and safety.

Our service provides support for elderly people, it advocates for whanau/family and service providers and provides referrals to other organisations such as health services, solicitors and police.

We also provide education to resthomes, community groups and organisations.

Abuse occurs when an older person experiences harm. It can happen in a number of ways - physical, emotional or psychological, financial or property related, sexual or wilful neglect. The abuse is likely to be someone in a position of trust such as a family member. The referrer may choose to remain anonymous. The older person has a right to accept or decline the service.

Referrer Feedback

Because of the personal and confidential nature of this work, there is limited opportunity for feedback to be provided unless the referrer is a health professional.

The note on our website states: “Confidentiality - All services are provided with the greatest respect for confidentiality of the individual, however, where there are issues of immediate safety, the Privacy Act 1991 does provide for the sharing of personal information for protection purposes.”

Emergencies - It should be noted that, although we will endeavour to respond very quickly to concerns, we do not offer an emergency service. Any person who is in immediate danger, or considers that another person is in serious danger, should call emergency services on 111 immediately.

Other Details

As noted above, we also provide an Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Education Service. Our Elder Protection Services Coordinator is available to provide education and training to rest-homes, education organisations, professional organisations, etc.

These services are free of charge.

We provide these services across the Taranaki region – from Mokau in the north, to Waitotara in the south, and all around our maunga.
