Tui Ora Jazzes Up Waitara Foodbank Appeal

Last Updated: December 2019

Tui Ora is shifting into high gear ahead of Christmas for massive Foodbank drive.

Kaimahi and their supporters are being invited to join together to fill one of their trademark Honda Jazz cars with food to give the Waitara Foodbank an extra boost during the festive season.

The challenge kicks off on Monday 9 December and wraps up on Friday 20 December, loosely based on the 12 days of Christmas. The drive for donations will be targeted to those items most needed, with reminders being sent out about what is needed every day to fill the Jazz till its overflowing.

Procurement and Facilities Administrator Lyn Hoskin, who was one of the people behind the idea, said the zappy yellow cars are a vital part to the community services Tui Ora provide.

“Most of our services are fully mobile, we can go to see the community rather than having them come to us…it’s a great way for the community to connect to us.”

Taranaki Honda supplies and maintains the Tui Ora fleet and have also come on board.

“They have a really strong relationship with us and this is part of celebrating that.”

Many people Tui Ora are working with can find the Christmas period a struggle as they do their best to stretch limited budgets.

“There’s so much pressure for whānau to give their families the best Christmas they can. They can stretch themselves too much for their kids and then it takes weeks to recover afterwards.”

There are plenty of generous people at Tui Ora and Lyn says she hopes the focus for donations will catch more attention than a standard appeal for help.

“It’s awesome to have Taranaki Honda on board and we’re going to spread the word much wider than that as well. Anyone is welcome to contribute.”

On the food drive shopping list are: tinned tomatoes, tinned fish, vegetables, long life/powdered milk, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter/jam, toilet paper, tinned spaghetti, sugar, milo, biscuits, crackers, muesli bars, instant coffee, baked beans, soup, tinned fruit, fresh fruit, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, dishwashing liquid, clothes wash, nappies and tampons/sanitary pads.
