Budget announcement to see expansion of Whānau Ora
Tui Ora welcomes the multi-million-dollar investment in Whānau Ora announced in last week’s Wellbeing Budget which includes investment in the workforce, in new local commissioning bodies and in recognition across Government.
“It’s great to see that Whānau Ora is being recognised for the work it’s doing in Taranaki to make a difference in the lives of families’ health and wellbeing,” says chief executive Hayden Wano. “We are also heartened by the increasing recognition and support that will be provided to the Whānau Ora workforce of kaiāwhina/kaiārahi (navigators).”
Further detail is yet to come, and until the organisation is aware of those implications, it is difficult to comment further. Tui Ora staff are attending a post-budget announcement today and tomorrow where they will receive more information.
The review of Whānau Ora released in February 2019 noted that the current model of three commissioning agencies – one based in the North Island, one in the South and one for Pasifika families - presented some difficulties in developing local solutions.
Last week’s Budget said: “Investment in the current commissioning approach will be increased, alongside the development of innovative localised commissioning options, to ensure Whānau Ora continues to be responsive to the needs and aspirations of whānau communities.”
It also provides investment to provide professional development pathways for Whānau Ora navigators. Further, the Budget package increased Te Puni Kōkiri funding to facilitate engagement and foster greater support for Whānau Ora across Government.
“We are looking forward to the opportunities for collective impact in our communities and in continuing the kaupapa begun many years ago. These are exciting times for health and social services in our country,” said Mr Wano.
Whānau Ora, established in 2010, is about increasing the wellbeing of individuals in the context of their whānau. It recognises strengths and abilities exist within whānau and aims to support and develop opportunities that fulfil potential.
This year’s review affirmed the model of care which is not one programme or service but a way of providing services in a multi-disciplinary, culturally orientated way.
